Generator Services

The safe link between your home and your generator

A transfer switch is what safely connects your generator to your home's electrical system. It isolates your house from the utility grid when the generator is running — protecting utility workers and your equipment — and, in an automatic switch, handles the entire switchover for you without anyone lifting a finger.

Power Up installs both automatic and manual transfer switches, sized and wired correctly for your generator and panel. An automatic transfer switch (ATS) senses an outage, starts your generator, and moves your home to backup power in seconds — then switches back when the grid returns.

Common questions

Don't see your question? Call us at 401-309-9255 — we're happy to help.

What's the difference between an automatic and manual transfer switch?+

An automatic transfer switch (ATS) detects an outage, starts your generator, and switches your home to backup power on its own — then reverses when utility power returns. A manual switch requires you to start the generator and flip the switch yourself. Automatic is the most convenient, especially if outages happen while you're away.

Why can't I just plug a generator into an outlet?+

Back-feeding a generator into an outlet is dangerous and illegal — it can energize the utility lines and seriously injure line workers, and it bypasses your home's safety systems. A proper transfer switch isolates your home from the grid and connects the generator safely.

Do I need a transfer switch for my standby generator?+

Yes. Any permanently installed standby generator requires a transfer switch to connect to your home safely and legally. We include the right transfer switch as part of a complete generator installation.

Can you add a transfer switch to my existing generator?+

In most cases, yes. We can install or upgrade a transfer switch to work with an existing generator, as long as it's compatible. We'll assess your equipment and recommend the right solution.

Does installing a transfer switch require a permit?+

Yes. Transfer switch installation requires an electrical permit and inspection in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. We handle the permitting and inspection as part of the job.
